Lash Extension Aftercare: The Dos and Don’ts

Lash extensions are a great way to play up your eyes, save time on makeup, and look striking every day. But how long your extensions last depends not only on your artist, it depends on your aftercare too. Let’s go over the dos and don’ts after your lash appointment so you can keep them looking beautiful for as long as possible.

Lash extension aftercare: the dos and don'ts

Why does lash aftercare matter so much?

A lot of people think extensions don’t need special care, but that’s a big misconception. Without proper hygiene, you can run into problems that affect not just your retention but the health of your natural lashes.

What can happen with poor aftercare

Buildup of dirt and oil. Leftover makeup, dead skin cells, and oil collect between the lashes. It doesn’t just look unappealing, it also leads to premature shedding.

Risk of infection. Dirty lashes become the perfect environment for bacteria to multiply. In the worst case, this can lead to blepharitis, whose symptoms include:

  • Burning and eye irritation.
  • Itching along the lash line.
  • Red eyelids.
  • The feeling of something in your eye.

Demodex. These are microscopic mites that live in the hair follicles. They can start actively multiplying on dirty lashes, causing unpleasant consequences.

Disrupted lash growth. Natural lashes get oxygen through the skin. If the lash line is dirty, that oxygen is blocked, and the lashes start to weaken and fall out.

Dirt on the lashes can even get to the point where they start shedding at a light touch of the tweezers.

What you should do: caring for your lashes

Cleanse your lashes regularly. Wash them every day with a dedicated foam or solution to remove buildup and oil. A water-based foam cleanser works great for this.

Use a cleansing brush. A soft brush helps clean the finest debris out of the lash line. It keeps bacteria at bay and keeps your lashes looking healthy.

Pat your lashes dry gently. After washing, use a lint-free towel or a paper tissue to blot your lashes. Don’t rub them with your hands or a rough towel!

Brush your lashes. A dedicated spoolie (ask your artist for one) helps keep your lashes looking neat. Brush them gently, don’t tug.

Protect your lashes from physical damage. Don’t rub your eyes with your hands or touch your lashes often, so you don’t accidentally tug or pull one out.

How to wash your face with lash extensions

It’s really important to wash your lashes regularly, and a foam cleanser is ideal for it. Here’s a simple recipe:

  1. Mix 1 part hypoallergenic baby shampoo with 5 parts water.
  2. Pour it into a foaming dispenser to create a foam.
  3. Apply the foam to your lashes with a brush, gently massaging along the lash line.
  4. Rinse the foam off with clean water, avoiding any rubbing, and blot with a lint-free towel.

This method helps keep your lashes in perfect condition and prevents problems with the eyelid skin.

What not to do with lash extensions

Use oils. Oil-based products, including creams and mascara, break down the adhesive. Choose only water-based products.

Skip hygiene. If you don’t wash your lashes, it leads to buildup and a higher risk of infection.

Rub your eyes. This not only damages the lashes but also shortens your retention.

Remove the lashes yourself. This can damage your natural lashes and irritate the skin. Leave removal to your artist.

Caring for your extensions is simple, but it really matters. Regular hygiene, proper cleansing, and following your artist’s advice will keep them looking beautiful and keep your natural lashes healthy. Lash extensions are gorgeous, but only with the right care. Remember: your beauty is in your hands! 😊
