Bottom Lash Extensions

Not every artist offers it, but bottom lash extensions are exactly what gives that extra WOW factor, because the bottom lashes are what make the eyes look bigger and the gaze even more striking. Let’s dig into all the ins and outs of this service.

Bottom lash extensions

The benefits of bottom lash extensions

You, and more importantly your client, will be amazed at how just 10 to 15 extra bottom lashes can change not only the gaze but the whole face, making it look slimmer.

But the main benefit is no more mascara on the bottom lashes. Your client can finally forget about clumped bottom lashes that left mascara smudges under her eyes by the end of the day.

On top of that, bottom lashes reduce the risk of imbalance with overly bold, voluminous top lashes, while still looking very natural.

And don’t forget a nice bonus for lash artists: extra income. And since the bottom row has far fewer lashes, the set takes no more than 30 minutes.

Who are bottom lash extensions for?

Almost everyone. But especially clients who like to define their bottom lashes with mascara to make the gaze more expressive.

Bottom lash extensions are also a real must-have for fans of super-volume sets, since they help balance the look and get rid of the harsh contrast with the top lashes.

Who are bottom lash extensions NOT for?

Clients with very short or, conversely, very long bottom lashes should skip this. On the first, extensions look very unnatural, and on the second, the lashes will catch the skin, which clearly gets in the way of comfortable wear. And in general, when the natural bottom lashes are dense, long, and full, they don’t need extensions.

The technique for lower-lid extensions

Knowing how to lash the bottom lashes correctly is a useful skill not every artist has. This kind of set takes more prep.

The client’s top lashes should be taped up over the lid, and you absolutely need hydrogel pads under the bottom lashes, because as you work the bottom row, the sharp tips of your tweezers point downward and there’s a high risk of “poking” the client.

You also need to make sure the client can still fully close their eyes, to keep out adhesive fumes that can cause irritation and even a potential burn to the sclera.

And remember that the bottom lashes sit closer to the surface of the face, so we strongly recommend using a cleanser before the treatment (the application process is the same as for the top lashes).

Important! Lash the bottom lashes the same way you would the top, always shorter in the inner corners.

Which lashes should you use?

Bottom lashes should always be less curled than the top ones, to keep the gaze natural. We recommend flatter curls, B or C, depending on the maker.

The best thickness is 0.05 to 0.07 mm, and length 5 to 7 mm, depending on the client’s natural lashes. Make sure the lashes aren’t too long, or it can look very unnatural.

How to remove bottom extensions?

Removal isn’t much different from the top lashes. But be extra careful not to get remover in the client’s eyes.

How long do bottom lash extensions last?

Since clients touch their bottom lashes with their hands far more often, this kind of set lasts about 2 weeks on average. Because of that relatively short wear time, artists don’t do fills on bottom lashes; they simply apply new ones when the client returns.

Never stop growing. Learn new techniques, try things, experiment. The new skills and techniques you offer clients are exactly what help you stand out from other artists and stay in demand.

Happy lashing!
