How Often Should You Refresh the Adhesive Drop?

One of the important rules in lash extensions: you need to refresh the adhesive drop regularly during the application, even if it still looks fine to the eye. You’ve probably wondered: why? And what happens if you don’t?

How often should you refresh the adhesive drop?

Over time, the adhesive starts to lose its properties, because polymerization begins the moment you dispense the drop onto a surface.

There’s no single timeframe that fits everyone for how often to change the drop. It depends on a lot of factors, from the environment to the surface the drop sits on.

On average, the rule of thumb is to refresh the drop every 25 to 35 minutes.

How do you know it’s time to change the drop?

There are a few main signs:

✖️ The drop is thicker than usual. Notice more adhesive than you need staying on the lash, and it doesn’t spread evenly? That’s a signal the drop has lost its original consistency. Adhesive like that dries slower, creates more stickies, and holds the fans poorly.

✖️ A white film appeared. If a white ring has formed around the drop, it could be from air that’s too humid or from contamination. That film is a bad sign that the drop needs changing.

✖️ The drop is crystallizing. When the edges of the drop start to harden, or the whole drop crystallizes, that’s normal, but only if the process isn’t happening too fast.

✖️ The drop has started separating. If the drop splits into a black part and a clear part, that’s abnormal for adhesive, and you can’t work with a drop like that. It most likely needed longer shaking before you started using it. If it happens even after enough shaking, it’s best to toss that adhesive.

If the adhesive has already started losing its properties and you keep working, the bond between the natural and synthetic lashes won’t be as reliable. A fresh working drop gives a fuller bond and better wrapping around the natural lash. So we still recommend changing the drop at the recommended interval, even if it still looks fine on the outside.
